Movement in the New Year

In the first 48 hours of the new year, I played with different parts of movement I enjoy.

I went to yoga- where we also had a bit of a dance break.

I went for a bike ride with my kids along the full arroyos thanks to our recent storms.

I swam 2300 yards for 2023.

My movement practices have varied and changed over the years. In the past, it was very much led by diet culture and my desire to shrink myself to be more accepted into the world. That never felt good. But, I was praised for it, and that did feel good.

One gift of middle age, combined with doing the work of kicking diet culture to the curb, I’ve explored and learned what I really love, how I love to feel in relationship with movement, or even simply noticing HOW I feel in my body. I love sensory rich movement, where I feel the way my body moves with and in the world. It’s why I love water so damn much. It’s such a sensory rich experience.

Maybe more movement is something you want to strive for this year. I gently ask you to explore some questions if it is…

  • How do I want to feel as I move in and with my body?
  • What might I choose if something I try doesn’t feel good? (This doesn’t mean you have to stop doing it. It also doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it.)
  • What are my goals for movement?
  • What is motivating me toward movement?

Spend some time writing or reflecting on these questions and notice what comes up in your body, emotions and thoughts.

However you choose to move through the world this year, I wish you the very best.

I wish you ease. I wish you joy. I wish you peace.

I wish you deep rest.

Wishing you an easeful and peaceful 2023.
